The more preparation and knowledge you can gather before starting your business, the more likely you are to achieve your goals. Here are five things you need to do before starting your business. 

Know Yourself 

To succeed in business, you need to know how to use your strengths to your advantage. Many people make the mistake of trying to emulate other successful people and industry leaders, but this approach can backfire. While it's important to learn from those who have already achieved success, trying to stick to someone else's career plan can be limiting, and it may not suit your strengths or your goals. Take the time to learn about your strengths and weaknesses. Look at ways to use your strengths and find ways to counteract your weaknesses. Experiment to find out how, when and where you work best. 

Develop Your Personal Skills 

Personal skills are needed in all areas of business, whether dealing with customers or hiring employees. Communication skills are crucial for getting your message across effectively. However, communication is a two-way process, so you also need to learn how to listen to what other people are saying. Body language, tone of voice and other non-verbal cues are often more important than the words you say; consider taking a course to learn about body language and active listening skills. Project management, conflict resolution and leadership skills are also crucial for most entrepreneurs, particularly if you intend to hire employees.

Learn About Your Industry 

Each industry has its own set of rules, some of which are unwritten and informal. Take the time to learn the rules and find out what is expected of newcomers working in your chosen field. Gather as much knowledge as possible about the industry leaders and key players, as well as your competitors and potential allies. Follow blogs, social media accounts and sign up for newsletters of industry leaders, trade magazines and other important people. In addition, learn about the history of your industry and keep up-to-date on technological and other developments that could affect your business in the future.

Master One Thing 

Trying to master every side of your business can often backfire, as few people are able to become experts in all areas of their business. Mastering just one thing and becoming known for your expertise in a specific area is the quickest and most effective strategy for building your brand and spreading the word about your business. Look for an area or skill that no one else in your industry is using to their full advantage. For example, if most of your competitors are using Facebook and Twitter as their main social media platforms, you could shift your focus to building a loyal following on Instagram or YouTube. Alternatively, you may choose to provide a service, customization options or other valuable additions that your competitors don't provide.

Define Your Goal

Vague aims and goals are difficult to achieve, so it's important to define exactly what you want from your business. You need to be as specific as possible when setting goals, identifying important landmarks along the way to help keep you motivated. If money is your motivation, write down the exact amount you want to earn within a set time frame. If you want to build a recognizable brand, identify specific publications you want your business to be featured in, awards you want to win or the number of followers you want on social media.
